Wireless sensing-immersive integrated satellite and terrestrial networks (WiseNET)
Satellite and terrestrial networks are becoming increasingly interconnected, creating new opportunities for wireless communications, sensing, and localization. Yet, rapidly changing radio environments and the growing number of connected and autonomous devices pose challenges for reliable connectivity, efficient spectrum use, and energy consumption. WiseNET’s vision is to integrate wireless sensing and immersive digital models to make satellite–terrestrial networks more aware of their environment. By combining communications with sensing, we aim to help networks anticipate changes, adapt intelligently, and support precise localization and safer autonomous operation.
To realize this vision, WiseNET will deliver scientific innovations in radio-environment digital twins, AI-driven network awareness, adaptive satellite–terrestrial connectivity, and joint communication and sensing for localization, tracking, and collision avoidance. These innovations will support more efficient use of spectrum and energy, more reliable handovers, and the coordination of densely deployed unmanned vehicles. As an FWO strategic basic research project, WiseNET will also transfer its scientific knowledge to an industry user group spanning satellite technology, mobile networks, transport, UAVs, and data analytics. Guided by the project’s valorization objectives, this collaboration will translate research results into follow-up R&D projects, pilot studies, feasibility studies.
1 October 2026 - WiseNET got started.
Autonomous ground vehicles and railway systems need dependable communication and accurate positioning, including in places with limited coverage or strong interference. WiseNET investigates how terrestrial and satellite networks can work together to maintain connectivity as vehicles move between coverage areas. By anticipating changes in radio conditions and combining communication with sensing, the project aims to reduce connection losses and improve positioning in indoor and outdoor environments. Potential applications include robotics, automated transport, and railway infrastructure.
Drones can support inspection and monitoring in remote locations and around offshore infrastructure, where mobile network coverage may be limited. WiseNET explores how integrated satellite and terrestrial connectivity can support these operations while accounting for changing altitude, interference, and energy constraints. By adapting transmission settings and the allocation of radio resources, the project aims to reduce communication energy consumption and maintain reliable links for monitoring infrastructure and vessels.
